Did you know there are different types of editing? Some editors offer plot evaluation or story planning guidance, while others are more focused on proofreading for grammatical errors or typos. And some act much like beta readers, checking for gaps or inconsistencies, evaluating the style, and asking questions. I offer all three of these services (see below). Though, it's best to tackle one at a time.

Feel free to get in touch! Tell me about your Work In Progress. I'll be happy to let you know which service(s) I recommend. I also offer a Start-To-Finish Author Coaching Service which includes guidance and editing throughout the entire creative process.

Plot Evaluation:

Stage: Outline, Work in Progress or Early Manuscript Draft

As the name suggests, this is a broad look at the overall plot. I will evaluate and provide feedback regarding:

- Overall Plot Strength

(Does it make sense? Is it complete?)

- Character Development

- Story Structure

- Writing Style

-Setting Development

-How your story fits in the current publishing market

Don't worry, you won't just get a list of criticism. I will explore both the strengths and weaknesses of your work. I will also provide guidance on how to make improvements. I may even offer sources of information to benefit your approach. As a writer, you are already wonderfully talented. A plot evaluation is a great tool to help you hone your strengths and improve the details we sometimes overlook.

Unlike the other stages of editing, this one won't include a marked-up copy of your manuscript. Instead, you'll receive a Word Doc letter with a full discussion of the evaluated work.

A plot evaluation can be performed on a full novel manuscript, chapter, group of chapters, short story, or even an outline. For a price quote, send a brief description of your work to creativemainemom@gmail.com.

Copy Editing:

Stage: Complete and polished manuscript or story.

Copy editing should be the final phase of editing before your work is published. This ensures a flawless finish. Nothing distracts from good writing more than an obvious typo. In fact, the presence of typos is one of the most common complaints in online reviews.

Copy editing is sometimes referred to as proofreading. This is a technical evaluation of the text to locate and correct flaws.

While you have probably read and proofed your story several times. Unfortunately, there is a tricky phenomenon that plagues all writers. We tend to read what we know our text is supposed to say, missing slight discrepancies in what is really there. This is where an unbiased editor comes in handy.

Here are a few things I watch for during copy-editing:

  • Spelling

  • Grammar

  • Punctuation

  • Flow and syntax

  • Run-on sentences

  • Hyphenation

  • Proper numeral use

  • Fonts/ format agreement

  • Capitalization

  • Tense agreement

  • General typos

Delivery: copyedit is returned as a marked-up Word Doc. Each edit will be easily identified and ready for your approval. I typically also include a clean (mark free) version for clients who may struggle with the track changes program and/or don't have the time to go through every minute adjustment.

In the comments, I may also point out any inaccuracies, inconsistencies, missing transitions, plot gaps, or spots that could use trimming, greater character development, more imagery, and so forth. In essence, anything that may hold your story back from its true potential.
