Modern Editing
Choose one or more of these services to create your own custom service plan:
Plot Evaluation, Line Editing, Copy Editing, or Book Review.
Plot Evaluation
_______
Stage: Outline, Work in Progress or Early Manuscript Draft
As the name suggests, this is a broad look at the overall plot. I will evaluate and provide feedback regarding:
- Overall Plot Strength (Does it make sense? Is it complete?)
- Character Development
- Story Structure
- Pacing
- Writing Style
- Setting Development
- How your story fits in the current publishing market
You'll receive a Word Doc letter with a full discussion of the evaluated work. A plot evaluation can be performed on a full novel manuscript, chapter, group of chapters, short story, or even an outline.
For a price quote, send a brief description of your WIP to creativemainemom@gmail.com.
Line Editing
_______
Stage: Unpolished Story or Manuscript.
A line edit addresses the content, style, and language used. The goal is to evaluate how your story is communicated and identify omissions or areas needing improvement. While this is sometimes done at the same time as a copyedit, it should be done first, as a separate step. In some cases, it should be done multiple times.
Why?
Greater focus on the overall style, language, and story.
The recommended changes may result in portions being added or rewritten. These changes may require a subsequent copyedit.
Line editing is more concerned with style and syntax than typos or grammar. It is primarily focused on the sentence and paragraph level. A few more things evaluated during line editing could include:
Sentence structure and flow
Scene hooks and transitions
Best word choices
Overuse of words or phrases
Sentence construction
Use of dialogue
Complete descriptions (5 senses)
Showing vs. Telling
Pinpointing ambiguity
Cultural accuracy
Reflection of genre boundaries
Fact-checking
Plot holes
Timeline consistency
Tell your story in the most effective way.
Delivery: You will receive a marked-up copy of your story or manuscript as well as a letter that summarizes the overall evaluation.
Small changes will be applied using Microsoft Word's Track Changes and are ready for your approval. Broader recommendations will be found as comments.
Send your word count and genre for a price quote and timeline. Rates average just $1.25/page.*$20 project minimum.
Copy Editing
_______
Stage: Complete and polished manuscript or story.
Copy editing should be the final phase of editing before your work goes to print. This ensures a flawless finish. Nothing distracts from good writing more than an obvious typo! In fact, the presence of typos is one of the most common complaints in online reviews.
Copy editing is sometimes referred to as proofreading. This is a technical evaluation of the text to locate and correct flaws.
You have probably read and proofed your story several times. So why bother with an editor?
There is a tricky phenomenon that plagues all writers. We have a tendency to read what we know our text is supposed to say, missing slight discrepancies in what is really there. This is where an unbiased editor becomes invaluable!
Here are a few things I watch for during copy-editing:
Spelling
Grammar
Punctuation
Flow and syntax
Run-on sentences
Hyphenation
Proper numeral use
Fonts/ format agreement
Capitalization
Tense agreement
General typos
Delivery: A copyedit is returned as a marked-up Word Doc. Each edit will be easily identified and ready for your approval. Upon request, I will also include a clean (mark free) version for writers who don't have the time to go through every little adjustment.
You will also receive a summary letter with the overall evaluation. I may point out obvious inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or gaps. However, this will not be the main focus. If this is the type of feedback you'd like, consider a Plot Evaluation or Line Edit instead.
Don't let typos hold your story back.
